As we approach peak farmers market season, we also face peak Michigan summer heat. A cold beverage is a sure way to quench your thirst and stay cool while you shop. Drinks like dirty sodas, fruit floats, and specialty lemonade are quickly rising in popularity.
Have you thought about selling beverages at your local farmers market? Michigan Cottage Food Law does not include ready-to-drink beverages, meaning they require a license to be sold. The type of license you need will depend on whether the beverages are prepared on-site at the market or prepared and packaged in a licensed facility and then sold at the market.

Licenses to serve ready-to-drink beverages are regulated by your local health department. These beverages must be manufactured in a licensed commercial kitchen inspected by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). MIFMA recommends connecting with your regional MDARD inspector for additional information about your specific situation and potential products.
