EAST LANSING, Mich — The Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) kicks off National Farmers Market Week from August 4 through 10, 2024 alongside community-driven marketplaces across the state and country. Many of Michigan’s farmers markets will be hosting special events, activities, and more to celebrate farmers and vendors and express appreciation for volunteers and shoppers.
“Farmers markets are more than simply places to buy food- they are pillars of thriving communities where everyone has equitable access to and feels connected to products grown and produced in Michigan,” said Hailey Lamb, Director of Communications at MIFMA. “National Farmers Market Week is a time to celebrate and support the market managers, farmers, vendors, and other local food champions that all work together to make it all possible!”
National Farmers Market Week is an annual celebration of farmers markets recognized by the Farmers Market Coalition with Michigan efforts supported by MIFMA. This year, National Farmers Market Week celebrations focus on how farmers markets have supported communities in the past and present and how they support building an even better future.
In Michigan, approximately 300 farmers markets serve their communities by increasing food access, often in areas where grocery options are scarce, and by supporting small businesses. MIFMA supports Michigan’s farmers markets in their goal to make fresh, local goods accessible to everyone through food access programs including SNAP/EBT, Double Up Food Bucks, and Produce Prescription.
