Farmers markets in Michigan are stronger because we stand behind them.
Your contribution is needed to support market managers in establishing, maintaining, and growing thriving farmers markets—vital community resources that serve your neighbors, local farmers and businesses, and you.
If a Saturday morning isn’t complete without a trip to your local farmers market, or if walking to the local park on a Wednesday afternoon to grab a quart of the freshest strawberries helps you mark the beginning of summer, then you’ve felt the pure joy of a farmers market. Farmers markets are full of sights, sounds, and smells that create a joyful atmosphere.
Although we all need food, accessing it can be a challenge. Whether you live in an urban or rural community, you may be faced with barriers to accessing food that include transportation, affordability, and knowledge of selection and food preparation techniques, among others. As markets are set up, barriers are broken down. Farmers markets located thoughtfully and purposefully within a community, markets that accept food assistance benefits, and markets that offer educational opportunities can be integral to overcoming barriers and expanding food access in the community.
Individuals, organizations, and donors work tirelessly behind the scenes to help farmers markets thrive. The market manager, vendors, and their network of supporters go above and beyond setting up tents and displaying products to create thriving marketplaces. They work diligently all year round to ensure everyone has access to the market, to increase the viability of the farms and businesses that make up the market, and to develop and implement programming that celebrates the market as a place within the community for health, food access, inclusivity, and connection.
We connect markets so they can learn from each other, we give voice to their needs, and we build strong markets through training and technical assistance. We act as a centralized resource for market managers, farmers and vendors, and their supporters—a one-stop shop to meet their needs.
We need you to stand with us. The most important thing you can do to support local farmers markets is to shop there! With each bushel, peck, and pint you purchase you are helping farmers be profitable, investing in your health, and recognizing the community and economic benefits of the market. Making a donation to MIFMA and/or your local farmers market is how you can take your support to the next level. Your contribution is needed to support market managers in establishing, maintaining and growing thriving farmers markets—vital community resources that serve your neighbors, local farmers and businesses, and you. As a MIFMA donor, you can support the more than 300 farmers markets across Michigan that serve nearly every county in our state and communities just like yours.
